Janet McCrorie | Artist Spotlight

Janet McCrorie produces the most vibrant, colourful and energetic art. She captures the essence of Scottish Country Dance in her eye-catching work.

janet-photo-31“I live in East Lothian and my working life has revolved around teaching and creating arts and crafts. I have studied painting with the Open College of the Arts and at Leith School of Art and have had two excellent mentors in Jacqueline Watt and Damian Callan.

I paint Scottish dancers using mixed media, plotting out the familiar shapes by scraping and scratching vibrant colours across the painting, meeting the challenge of capturing the look of the tartan and the movement and exuberance of the dance.

I work from photographs, sketches and from life, attending Highland Dancing competitions, Scottish Country Dancing events and Ceilidhs all over Scotland. My aim is to make the viewer smile and to induce a sense of nostalgia while putting a modern twist on the spectacle of these ancient traditional dances.

My paintings have been used to illustrate the Royal Scottish Country Dancing Society’s Annual Review for 2011.”

Belties and Colourful Vases

Fiona Millar lives and works in the Scottish borders and is based at the WASPS Studios in Selkirk. Her instantly recognisable work, that often features flowers and Belties, is highly stylised and has an 1930’s Art Deco feel.

Buddleia Ceramic Gift Mug by Fiona Millar

She is a self-taught artist, and originates from a family familiar with art, as her father was an art dealer, and her sisters studied at Art College. Her family, aware of Fiona’s natural talent, encouraged her to develop her own style both in content and application. Fiona produces much sought after work. Her landscapes are influenced by the rolling countryside and hills of Galloway, and often feature her beloved Belties, her Still Lifes composed with colourful vases and flowers.
